Part I: Introduction

Welcome to LEGENDS 5.0. This is the long awaited upgrade to the outstanding
LEGENDS environment. LEGENDS is celebrating its third year of being the best
fantasy role-playing system for TBBS. Listen to some of the acclaim LEGENDS
has received from SYSOPS:

        "LEGENDS is the best on-line entertainment I have ever been in."
                                - Robert Becker

             "A great way to lose yourself and it frequently draws
                       a crowd of serious players . . ."
                                  - David Mack

                         "The game has been fantastic."
                               - Christina Hicks

               "The TDBS game all others will be judged against."
                                 - Adam Rosien

Part II: What is LEGENDS?

LEGENDS 5.0 is an interactive role-playing environment which supports up to
sixty-four different players in real-time. Players explore a fantasy world of
forests, townies, ruins, mountains, dungeons, and swamps. In addition to over
two-thousand different locations, players will battle over eight-hundred
monsters, solve over sixty puzzles, and discover magical weapons and armors.

Unlike a simple text adventure, players can interact with other characters who
are on-line with them through communication and combat. Not only can players
fight one another in real-time, they can also ban together to form adventuring
parties, using their different abilities, like magic and fighting, to combat
Evil and solve quests. The complete LEGENDS 5.0 system accepts over
one-hundred and fifty commands, giving players unlimited capabilities within
the game.

Part II: What is LEGENDS FORGE?

In addition to a role-playing environment, LEGENDS 5.0 is 100% expandable by
way of the unique LEGENDS FORGE software. SYSOPS create GODs and DemiGODs who
can create and destroy new rooms, items, monsters, spells, events, and NPCs.
GODs control the realm. They can make, edit, or destroy anything. In
addition, they have the power to create DemiGODs. Using powerful but
easy-to-learn commands, DemiGODs can forge their own areas and puzzles for
players to solve. In addition, the FORGE gives DemiGODs other powers that they
do not have within the normal LEGENDS environment including teleportation,
global broadcasts of important messages, and also custom-defined messages that
are displayed when a DemiGOD enters and leaves the game.

Part III: What is THRONE OF THE UNDEAD?

After thirty years of peace under the rule of Lord Paramount, an Evil force is
creeping into the realm. With the assistance of the Sorceress BranwenLlyr,
players must band together to seek out three magical objects that will open the
door to the crypt of an Evil Necromancer named Puffalow. Only by working
together will they be able to stop the minions of Evil from taking over the
realm.

Unlike prior versions of LEGENDS, which included only a town and a two-hundred
room dungeon, LEGENDS 5.0 includes the Throne of the Undead adventure. This
huge quest is based off of the on-going struggle between Good and Evil players
on my own system. Featuring the characters and ideas of seven different
DemiGODs, this adventure game contains over two-thousand rooms, eight-hundred
monsters, sixty puzzles, and over one-hundred weapons, armors, magical items,
and treasures.

Chapter I: Installation

Installation of LEGENDS 5.0 is extremely easy. The following sections explain,
in detail, how to get LEGENDS up and running on your system as fast as
possible. There are several customization features you will want to use, so
please read carefully.

*NOTE* LEGENDS 5.0 will not work with the old databases that are used by any
       prior version of LEGENDS. If you are currently running a previous
       version of LEGENDS 5.0, you have several update options. Please refer
       to Part II for more information on your update options.

Part I: Installing the LEGENDS software for the first time.

This section will guide you through the installation process for getting
LEGENDS 5.0 up and running on your system for the first time. If you are
currently running LEGENDS but want to start out a fresh game, follow these
instructions also.

  1. Create a new directory for the LEGENDS software within your TBBS
     directory. For example, use LEGENDS5. The complete path would be:

      C:\TBBS\LEGENDS5

  2. Extract the LEGENDS 5.0 archive into this new directory.

  3. Run INSTALL5.EXE. This program will present you with the following menu:

     1. Install LEGENDS 5.0 from scratch.
     2. Update LEGENDS 4.x to 5.0 using current game.
     3. Update LEGENDS 4.x to 5.0 using new world, but save current players.
     4. Exit.

     Select option 1. This option will initialize the appropriate databases
     and generate the corresponding index files.

     Once INSTALL5 has completed its task, you can delete it, because it is no
     longer required.

  4. Update your .SDL file by adding the following line to the menu on which
     you would like the users to be able to access the game.

      Entry:
      L -> LEGENDS 5.0
      Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=-
      KEY=L TYPE=200 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\legends /Q  &&

     The && MUST be in your Opt Data line. After the && in the Opt Data line,
     you can add one or more of the following flags in order to customize your
     LEGENDS system:

      /S This option forces LEGENDS to generate a score board when a player
          logs off. In previous versions of LEGENDS, SCORES.TXT was
          generated automatically, but for some systems, that was a waste of
          time because they didn't show the score list.

      /I This option causes the Invisible flag in the userlog to be toggled
          on when a player enters LEGENDS. When the player leaves Legends -
          either by the QUIT command or by disconnecting, their userlog is
          returned to visible again. This feature is used to hide a
          character's true identity.

      /R This option forces RIP graphics. You may add two different
          entries to your .SDL file if you use this feature - one with RIP,
          the other without.

     For example, if you wanted LEGENDS to automatically generate the score
     board and make your players invisible to the other users on the board,
     your Opt Data line would look like this:

      Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\legends /Q  && /S /I

  5. Next, update your .SDL file by implementing the LEGENDS FORGE into your
     menu system. I recommend placing the LEGENDS FORGE option on the same
     menu with your LEGENDS game. On my system, I also used the A1-A4 flags to
     hide this menu item from normal players. Here is an example entry:

      Entry:
      F -> LEGENDS FORGE 5.0
      Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=-
      KEY=F TYPE=200 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\lgndforg /Q  &&

     After the && in the Opt Data line, you have two flags which you can use to
     customize your LEGENDS system:

      /I When this flag is added, DemiGODs who enter the FORGE become
          invisible to the other users of the board. When the player
          leaves Legends - either by the QUIT command or by disconnecting,
          their userlog is returned to visible again. This feature is used
          to hide a character's true identity.

      /R This option forces RIP graphics. You may add two different
          entries to your .SDL file if you use this feature - one with RIP,
          the other without.

     For example, if you wanted LEGENDS FORGE to turn your DemiGODs invisible
     and force RIP graphics, your Opt Data Line would look like this:

      Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\lgndforg /Q  && /I /R

  6. (This step is necessary if and only if your LEGENDS 5.0 Opt Data line has
     a /S flag in it.) Add an entry that will display the LEGENDS 5.0 Hero
     listing:

      Entry:
      S -> LEGENDS 5.0 HERO LISTING
      Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=-
      KEY=S TYPE=1 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\scores.txt

  7. If your system has a menu item that allows callers to see who is on-line
     at that moment, I have included a small program called LGNDSWHO.TPG which
     can be called instead of the normal TBBS Type=50. When run LGNDSWHO.TPG
     will display the callers on your system, as normal. Next, it determines
     if anyone is playing LEGENDS, and if so, it displays the alias of the
     player. Here is an example of how you can modify your .SDL file:

      Entry:
      W -> Who is on-line?
      Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=-
      KEY=W TYPE=200 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\lgndswho /Q

  8. Compile the .SDL file.

  9. LEGENDS 5.0 requires its ghost task to be run once a day. This process
     will age old players, move monsters, and change the inventory of the
     stores for that day. In addition, you can also select whether or not you
     would like the GHOST TASK to re-generate the indexes when it is run.
     Using CEDIT, add the following Ghost Task to your system:

      Entry #, Occurs on Line 16 at 23:60 on Sun,Mon,Tue,Wed,Thu,Fri,Sat
                Type = 200 OptData = c:\tbbs\legends5\gtask /Q  &&

     A time of 23:60 causes this Ghost Task to be activated automatically when
     your BBS is run.

     If you want the Ghost Task to re-index your LEGENDS databases each day,
     add a /I to the end of the OptData. For example:

       OptData = c:\tbbs\legends5\gtask /Q  && /I

 10. Run your BBS.

Part II: Updating an old version of LEGENDS.

This section will guide you through the installation process for updating an
existing game of LEGENDS 4.x to the new 5.0 software. If you would like to
start a new game, without saving your existing players, world, items, etc.
please refer to Part I.

*NOTE* The INSTALL5 software is designed to update LEGENDS version 4.3 or
       higher. If you are running an older version, consider starting the
       LEGENDS 5.0 game from scratch or try using the INSTALL5 software and if
       you get run into problems, contact Jeffrey D. Hoffman.

Don't forget, LEGENDS 5.0 comes with more than 2000 rooms, 800 monsters, 60
puzzles, and 130 different items. Knowing this, you can choose one of two
update options. The first option is to discard of the 5.0 world, and import
your existing game directly. All your players, their items, the monsters,
rooms, spells, and traps will be updated. The second option is to use the new
5.0 world, but update your existing players - including their experience
levels, hitpoints, spellpoints, etc. - into the game. (Their items will be
lost by this feature, however.)

  1. Create a new directory for the LEGENDS software within your TBBS
     directory. Do not use the same directory your LEGENDS 4.x software is
     running in.

     4. Exit.

     Select option 2 if you want to upgrade your ENTIRE world. All your
     players, items, monsters, rooms, etc. will be imported directly by taking
     the place of the world that comes with LEGENDS 5.0

     Select option 3 if you want to import your existing players into the new
     5.0 realm. This is the option that I recommend you use. This option will
     import your current players. Any items that they are carrying will be
     lost, but players will retain their hitpoints, spellpoints, experience
     points, etc. by this option.

     After you have selected an option, you will be prompted for the complete
     path of your old LEGENDS software. Enter it and press return. INSTALL5
     will then go to work.

     Once INSTALL5 has completed its task, you can delete it, because it is no
     longer required.

  4. Update your .SDL file to reflect the new directory that LEGENDS can be
     found in. In addition, you MUST add && at the end of the existing line
     and add any additional flags to the line to customize your LEGENDS system.
     For example:

      Entry:
      L -> LEGENDS 5.0
      Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=-
      KEY=L TYPE=200 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\legends /Q  &&

     After the && in the Opt Data line, you can add one or more of the
     following flags in order to customize your LEGENDS system:

      Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\legends /Q  && /S /I

      Entry:
      F -> LEGENDS FORGE 5.0
      Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=-
      KEY=F TYPE=200 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\lgndforg /Q  &&

     After the && in the Opt Data line, you can add one or both of the
     following flags in order to customize your FORGE system:

      Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\lgndforg /Q  && /I /R

  6. (This step is necessary if and only if your LEGENDS 5.0 Opt Data line has
     a /S flag in it.) Add an entry that will display the LEGENDS 5.0 Hero
     listing:

      Entry:
      S -> LEGENDS 5.0 HERO LISTING
      Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=-
      KEY=S TYPE=1 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\scores.txt

      Entry:
      W -> Who is on-line?
      Priv=0 A1=-------- A2=-------- A3=-------- A4=-------- ANS=- IBM=-
      KEY=W TYPE=200 Opt Data=c:\tbbs\legends5\lgndswho /Q

                Type = 200 OptData = c:\tbbs\legends5\gtask /Q  &&

     A time of 23:60 causes this Ghost Task to be activated automatically when
     your BBS is run.

     If you want the Ghost Task to re-index your LEGENDS databases each day,
     add a /I to the end of the OptData. For example:

       OptData = c:\tbbs\legends5\gtask /Q  && /I

 10. Run TBBS.

Part III: The demo version versus the registered version

The demonstration version of LEGENDS is a fully functioning version of the
game. Players and DemiGODs have the capability of trying any feature in
LEGENDS. However, in the demonstration version, players may only play once per
day, which means if they quit or if they are killed, they must wait until the
following day to enter LEGENDS again.

LEGENDS is distributed by Safe Harbor Computers. You can order your
registered copy of LEGENDS by calling (800) 544-6599*. (Safe Harbor Computers
is available Monday-Friday from 9:00am-8:00pm CST and Saturday from

Chapter III: Getting started -- A tutorial for SYSOPs

Part I: Creating your character

At this point, LEGENDS 5.0 and LEGENDS FORGE 5.0 will be functioning and ready
to roll on your BBS. The following section is designed to introduce you to how
the game operates and how to establish DemiGODs in the realm.

Since all of the commands for character maintenance and creating DemiGODs are
handled in the FORGE, the first thing you need to do is establish a character
for yourself which will be present in the game. You have two options. If you
plan on playing LEGENDS in the future, you may want to enter LEGENDS and create
a new character. Otherwise, you can enter the FORGE right away, and a special
character called Realm Overseer will be created for you. This special
character is given a unique race and occupation, a great number of hitpoints,
and also immunity to all forms of attack. This character becomes the God of
the realm.

If you plan on playing the game at all, please refer to the PLAYER'S HANDBOOK
for information on how to move and interact with the game. The DEMIGOD
HANDBOOK will give you full understanding of all the features of the FORGE and
how to work within it. However, neither manual will instruct you on how to
create DemiGODs, which is the primary reason you are in the FORGE.

Before I get into DemiGOD creating, there are a couple of things that, as God,
you should know. First, your character has the ultimate say in any part of the
realm. Unlike DemiGODs who can only edit and destroy their own creations, you
have the capability to edit or destroy ANYTHING, no matter who made it. You
also see information that others will not, provided that you do not give them
the privilege settings to do so. You have access to all of the commands in the
FORGE, whereas DemiGOD may or may not be able to use those commands, based on
how much privilege they receive. (For more information on privilege, see
section of editing players.)

Part II: What are DemiGODs and why should I have them?

Although LEGENDS 5.0 features an epic adventure of Good versus Evil, eventually
your players will solve the quests, defeat Puffalow, and triumph over Evil. In
a Normal adventure, the game would be over, and players would be forced to
either repeat the adventure again, or stop playing all together. However,
LEGENDS is not a Normal adventure system. By creating DemiGODs, your realm
will continue to expand, featuring more quests, new monsters, rooms, and traps.

A DemiGOD is an immortal being who has the power to create and destroy things
in the realm. Although their powers are limited, unlike yours, they have
enough power to create their own quests for players to go on. Here are several
guidelines I recommend that you follow when choosing and creating DemiGODs:

 1. DemiGODs should be chosen from players who are at least level 40.
 2. DemiGODs should also have experience being a Dungeon Master or Game Master
    in any of the paper role-playing systems like TSR's Advanced Dungeons and
    Dragons 2nd Edition.
 3. DemiGODs must be fair and should treat each player with respect.
 4. DemiGODs should be constant role-players.
 5. DemiGODs should have active involvement in the game by arranging
    adventuring parties, helping new players, and constantly trying to solve
    new quests.

One of the worst mistakes that can be made by a God of the realms (that's you)
is not monitoring the progress of your DemiGODs. Without some level of
supervision, DemiGODs may often create super-powerful magical weapons and
armors, making themselves (or other players) invincible and unstoppable. When
that happens, new players will often be killed because they are weak, and wars
are started between the hard-working DemiGODs and the power-hungry DemiGODs.

(Utilities like the DeamonTask Professional software, now available, will
assist you in determining which of your DemiGODs are working hard, and which
may be abusing their powers.)

Don't forget, it is just as easy to take DemiGOD powers away as it is to give
them. If a DemiGOD does not create new quests and role-play with your players
it is better to remove that DemiGOD than lose all the players that DemiGOD may
offend or abuse.

Chapter IV: Privileged commands in the FORGE Command Parser

The commands listed in the following section are not found in the DemiGOD
HANDBOOK because these have been reserved for Realm Overseers. In addition to
these commands, all of the other commands listed in the DemiGOD HANDBOOK are
available to your character within the FORGE.

ALTER (REPLACE)
This command is used specifically for directly altering an attribute about a
player in the room with you. By avoiding the EDITPLAYER screen, you can make a
change to a character quickly and efficiently using this command. Here is an
example of how the command is used. In this example, SlashStormBringer has
come to you for assistance because his armor class has somehow been changed to
a ridiculously high number, and he has asked to have it returned to 5.

Command: look players

SlashStormBringer is here.

Command: replace slashstormbringer->ac with 5

Replaced.

As you can see, there is a specific syntax that this command uses. First, you
must put down the command, followed by the name of the character you wish to
enter. Then, you must enter the "->" followed by a keyword which represents
the player's attribute that you wish to change. Finally, add the "with" and
then the value you want to change the player's attribute to. Chart IV.I.I
contains a list of the possible keywords you can use to modify an attribute of
a player.

Chart IV.I.I: Alter, Replace Attributes and their keywords
              Attribute             Keyword  Accepted input

              Spellpoints           SP       Any positive number

EDITPLAYER (shortcut EP)
This command gives you the capability of editing any player, no matter where
they are in the realm, whether they are on-line or off. Simply enter this
command plus the name of the character you wish to edit and LEGENDS will bring
up that character's status for you to edit. (See the section on editing
players for more information)

Command: ep SlashStormBringer

(Editing screen)

OFFLINE
This command is used if you discover that LEGENDS thinks a player is on-line
when they are really not. This command will quickly remove a player's name
from the WHO'S ON-LINE listing if they are not really in the game. When used,
you will see a list of all active lines. A "." represents a line that is not
being used for LEGENDS, and a "X" means that a player is on-line. LEGENDS will
interpret that line and make the correct adjustments.

Command: offline

Lines currently active:
XXX...X....X.......XXX.XX.X...X.................................

Chapter V: Editing Players and DemiGODs

When you use the EDITPLAYER command, the following screen appears for you:
(Granted, there will be information in these fields, based on the character you
are editing.)

  Cur weight: .      Bank account:

A CHARACTER'S ALIAS
This field holds the name of the character that you are editing. This field is
also used to change the name of the player, if they want a new one.

DemiGOD PRIVILEGE
For a normal player, this field will contain fourteen periods (.) which means
that the player has no special privileges at all. Before a DemiGOD can enter
the FORGE, they must have at least one X in their privilege field. By placing
an X in a certain position, you can give different abilities to a DemiGOD.
Chart V.I.I contains the definition for each position of the Privilege field.

For example, lets give a DemiGOD the ability to teleport and to create rooms,
monsters and items. Referring to Chart V.I.I, we see that we need X's in
position 3, 5, 7, 8, and 9.  This DemiGOD's privilege field would look like
this:

 Privilege: ..X.X.XXX.....

As God of the realm, your privilege looks like this:

 Privilege: XXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Chart V.I.I: DemiGOD Privilege
             Position   Ability
             ------------------
             1          Can have multiple characters.

             3          Can teleport.
             4          Can summon monsters.
             5          Can create exits.
             6          Can create events.
             7          Can create items.
             8          Can create monsters.
             9          Can create rooms.
             10         Can create responses.
             11         Can create spells.
             12 Can use the ALTER command.
             13 Can edit ANY thing, including players.
             14 Can see identity of a player and their location.

RACE
A player's race can only be one of the following: Dwarf, elf, gnome, half-elf,
halfling, and human. Although LEGENDS supports the capability of giving a
player a different race, they will only receive average hitpoints and
spellpoints when they advance, because LEGENDS will not recognize that race.

OCCUPATION
This field holds the player's occupation. This occupation can be one of the
following: Assassin, avenger, cleric, fighter, jester, knight, ranger, scout,
sorcerer, thief, or warrior. If you give a character a custom occupation,
their character may not receive additional spellpoints when they advance.

A CHARACTER'S ALIGNMENT
The ALIGN field holds the alignment of the player. This must be either GOOD or
EVIL. Good players will only receive experience for killing an Evil monster.
On the other hand, Evil players must kill Good things in order to gain
experience. There are draw backs to being Evil, however. Since the
shopkeepers are Good, they will attack any Evil players that enter their
stores.

HOW WELL A PLAYER CAN HIT
The TO HIT field holds a value that adjusts how often a player makes a
successful hit against an opponent during combat. The higher the number, the
better chance the player has of successfully hitting an opponent. In addition,
the higher this number, the more often a player will critically hit an
opponent.

A PLAYER'S HITPOINT ADJUSTMENT
When a player advances, LEGENDS automatically rolls up a random amount of
hitpoints, to which the value in the HITPOINT ADJ field is added. This amount,
either positive or negative, adjusts the number of hitpoints a player receives
when they advance.

HOW WELL A THIEF PICKS A LOCK
The LOCK PICK ADJ field is used only if the player's occupation is thief. If
the player has an unusually high (or low) dexterity, they will receive a bonus
in this field which will either increase or decrease their ability to pick a
lock. The higher this number, the better chance a player has of opening a
locked door.

HOW MUCH DAMAGE A PLAYER DOES IN COMBAT
Below the TO HIT field you will find the TO DAMAGE field. This value is added
to the total amount of damage a player does during combat. The higher the
number in this field, the more damage the player will do.

A PLAYER'S SPELLPOINT ADJUSTMENT
Provided that a player uses magic and has spellpoints, the SPELLPOINT ADJ field
either adds or subtracts spellpoints to the number that a player receives when
they advance. The higher this number, the more spellpoints a character
receives when they advance an experience level.

HOW WELL A PLAYER DODGES AN ATTACK
The TO DEFENSE field determines how well a player can dodge and avoid receiving
damaging blows from an opponent. This field is subtracted from their armor
class, making it lower. The higher this value, the better a player's over-all
armor class.

HOW GOOD DOES A PLAYER LOOK?
The REACTION ADJ field is used during bartering and trading for items. The
higher this number, the more times a player will have to argue about the price
and get a better deal. If this number is negative, not only is the player
really ugly, they will usually have to take the first price the shopkeeper
offers.

A CHARACTER'S EXPERIENCE LEVEL
The LEVEL field holds the experience level that the player has reached. The
higher this number, the more powerful, more experienced the player is. When a
player starts out at level one, they are unskilled with weapons and armor, but
as their level improves, they have more capability of killing opponents, as
well as growing older, which gives they more hitpoints and spellpoints.

A CHARACTER'S EXPERIENCE
All of the things that a player has done, including casting spells, slaying
opponents, and solving puzzles are summed up into a single number, which is
held in the EXPERIENCE field. Once that number reaches a certain amount, the
player advances, and they continue to work towards the next number.

ARMOR CLASS
The character's ARMOR CLASS determines how much armor the player has and how
well he can avoid damage. This number starts at 25, which is the natural armor
class of an un-adjusted individual and works down to -25, which basically makes
the player unable to be hit. Different armors change the player's armor class
by varying amounts. In addition, their TO DEFENSE field changes their armor
class also.

HITPOINTS AND MAXIMUM HITPOINTS
This number represents how many hitpoints the player has currently. When it
reaches zero, the player will be killed. As a result, the more hitpoints a
player has the better. This field should never be higher than the maximum
number of hitpoints a player can have.

SPELLPOINTS AND MAXIMUM SPELLPOINTS
These fields hold number current and maximum number of spellpoints that a
player has to cast spells.

MAXIMUM AND CURRENT WEIGHT
These fields hold the numeric value, in pounds, of how much the player is
carrying. A player's strength adjusts how much a player can carry.

GOLD AND A PLAYER'S BANK ACCOUNT
These two fields contain the total assets that a player possesses. The GOLD
field holds how much gold the player is carrying with him, and the ACCOUNT
field holds how much gold is stored in their bank account.
