INTRODUCTION
============

        Welcome to the world of Declaration of War. This readme.txt file
contains information on how to install the demo program, playing the demo
game, and ordering the commercial version. Remember that this program runs
under Microsoft Windows.

INSTALLATION
============

        STEP ONE: To install the game, a directory must be created or
selected. If the game is already in a suitable directory skip to STEP THREE.
If there is a suitable directory already in existance on the hard drive,
proceed to STEP TWO. Otherwise create a subdirectory for it. For example:

                c:
                cd \
                md demwar

        STEP TWO: Copy the files demwar.exe, demwar.hlp, and readme.txt to
the desired directory. For example:

                copy c:\xtalk\fil\demwar.exe c:\demwar

        STEP THREE: Start Microsoft Windows and select the 'Games' program
group in the Program Manager. Use the menu command File-New... to create a
new program item. Enter "D.O.W. Demo" in the Description box and enter the
subdirectory that was used in STEP ONE followed by \demwar.exe in the Command
Line box, then select OK. For example:

                Description   D.O.W. Demo
                Command Line  c:\demwar\demwar.exe

        STEP FOUR: Start the game by double-clicking on the tank icon.

PLAYING THE GAME
================

        The demo game is played on a 30 x 20 square grid. There are various
islands throughout the grid with cities, forests, and mountains. You start
the game with one city and the computer player starts the game with another
city.
        The object of the game is to build up your forces, and capture cities
until you are strong enough to attack the computer player. To win the game
you must capture all of the computer player's cities and destroy all of
the computer player's pieces. You are called player #1 and have the blue
pieces, the computer is called player #2 and has the red pieces.
        You begin the game by selecting the type of piece that you want to
start building in your city. We recommend that you begin with an armored
piece as they can both explore, and take cities fairly well. When your first
piece has been built, you will see it on top of your city and you will also
be able to see the map one square in all directions. The rest of the squares
on the map are black This is because you haven't explored yet. To explore,
use the mouse to drag the first piece one square in any direction. This will
allow you to see more of the map because any square within one of your piece
will become uncovered. Each uncovered square will remain so until the end of
the game. Continue moving around until you have found a city (a white
L-shaped structure within a square). To capture it, move ontop of it. Two
things may happen: you might be destroyed or you might take the city. If you
take the city, it will turn blue and your piece will disappear, becoming a
garrison force inside the city. You will also be prompted to select what this
city will start to build.
        Meanwhile your other city is building a second piece. To change the
type of piece that is being built in a city, double-click on that city. A
dialog-box will pop up allowing you to change the piece. Any turns that went
into building the original piece will be lost if it is changed. If you are
stuck on an island, build a transport ship or a cargo plane to get off. Move
an armored piece or an infantry piece on top of the transport to load it.
Then move the transport over the sea to a new island.
