       STACKER NOTE STACKER NOTE
                               CREATE ERROR #66
(Applies to Stacker for Windows & DOS 3.0)

       _________________________________________________________________

       BACKGROUND

Create Error #66 is described as a "Directory Cluster Mismatch."
The error occurs when Setup begins tagging all files on the drive
being compressed. When Setup encounters a single directory
containing 2048 or more files (not including subdirectories), it
responds with a Create Error #66 in many cases.

       SOLUTION

Setup displays the directory where it believes the error exists,
which isn't always the one where the failure occurred. Here's how
       to solve it:

        1. Search the drive to locate the specific directory where the
error condition (2048 or more files in the directory)
            exists.
        2. Remove the directory containing 2048 or more files
           OR
break it up so that there are fewer than 2048 files in that
            single directory.
        3. Run Setup again.

In many cases, icon directories have large numbers of files in
them. Look for one of these to start. This may save some time in
       identifying the problem directory.

After receiving a Create Error #66, use these detailed steps if
       necessary:

        1. Run CHKDSK on the drive where the error occurred. Note the
number of user files on the drive. If there are more than
2000 user files, you may have a single subdirectory with a
large number of files in it.
        2. Locate the directory where the error occurred
           OR
If you don't have a file management utility such as
DOSSHELL, File Manager, or Xtree Gold, use the DOS DIR
command to find the directory in question.
           Type:
               DIR x:\ /S /P <Enter>
where x is the directory you want to examine. As the
directories scroll by one page at a time, note the number of
            files contained in each.

        3. When you find the directory containing 2048 or more files,
            do one of the following:
            a. Make a temporary subdirectory to move files into. Move
(or copy then delete) enough files to bring the number
under 2000. This reduces the size of the original
directory so that Setup can now run properly.
            b. Back up the data in the directory containing the 2048 or
more files and then remove the directory from the drive.
First, make sure you are in the directory where you want
to delete the files and then type:
                         DEL *.* <Enter>
Next change to the parent (or root) directory and type:
                         RD x <Enter>
where x is the directory name to remove.
After Stacker has been installed the customer may restore the
       directory to the drive.
