       BACKGROUND

Some computers don't support Microsoft's use of interrupt 1AH to
implement its pre-loading compression driver, although most
systems that support MS-DOS 6 do. If you have one of the
following models, Microsoft indicates that your computer may hang
       up in the startup process:

           Sharp models 6700, 6781, 6785, 6800 and 6881
           Cannon C-200 M-50 and C-200 M-55
           Computers using a Microsolutions Compaticard
           Positive Computers
           Snap-On Intel 386 and Intel AboveBoard 2.0
           Some AEG Olympia 386SX Laptops
           Some older ACER machines
           Texas Instruments (TI) Travelmate 2000
Zeos 80386 with an AMI BIOS dated 09/15/89

       SOLUTION

If you installed Stacker 3.1 new on your computer (your hard disk
was not already compressed), the solution is to reverse the
Stacker installation until updated Stacker files can be
       installed.

           Disable DBLSPACE.BIN
           Find STACVOL file(s)
Create or modify CONFIG.SYS to mount your compressed drives
           Locate your Stacker drives
           Run UNSTACK
           Install the updated Stacker files
           Insert /-LZS in STACKER.INI

       Disable DBLSPACE.BIN

        1. Restart your system with a startup disk. If you don't
already have a startup disk, you can use MS-DOS 6.0 Setup
Disk 1 if it is compatible with drive A, or you can use the
           MS-DOS 6.0 Uninstall disk.

        2. Change to the C drive by typing:

               C: <Enter>

        3. Change to the DOS subdirectory by typing:

               CD\DOS <Enter>

        4. Remove the attributes of DBLSPACE.BIN by typing:

               ATTRIB -R -H -S C:\DBLSPACE.BIN <Enter>

        5. Delete the DBLSPACE BIN file by typing:

               DEL C:\DBLSPACE.BIN <Enter>

       Find STACVOL file(s)

        1. Change to the Stacker subdirectory by typing:

               CD\STACKER <Enter>

        2. Find the name(s) of your STACVOL file(s) by typing:

               SYSINFO /F <Enter>

In the following example, SYSINFO /F indicates two STACVOL
           files, C:\STACVOL.DSK and C:\STACVOL.000:

               Stacker Volume Information
               Drive C:
                  STACVOL.DSK 67,108,864 Sys Hid R/O
                  STACVOL.000 67,108,864 Sys Hid R/O

Make a note of your STACVOL file name(s).

        3. If you have a STACVOL file named STACVOL.DSK on drive C,
then complete the procedure "Create CONFIG.SYS," otherwise
           complete the procedure "Modify CONFIG.SYS."

       Create CONFIG.SYS

        1. Change to the ROOT directory by typing:

               CD\ <Enter>

        2. Create a CONFIG.SYS file by typing the following:

               COPY CON CONFIG.SYS <Enter>
               DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM <your stacvol files> <Enter>
               <Ctrl+Z> <Enter>

NOTE: Replace <your stacvol files> with the actual STACVOL
           file name(s). For example,

               DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK
               C:\STACVOL.000

        3. Remove any floppy disks, and restart your computer. Skip to
the procedure, "Locate your Stacker drives."

       Modify CONFIG.SYS

        1. From the STACKER directory on drive C, type

               ED C:\CONFIG.SYS <Enter>

        2. Add the following line to the end of your CONFIG.SYS file:

               DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM <your stacvol files>

NOTE: Replace <your stacvol files> with the actual STACVOL
           file name(s). For example,

               DEVICE=C:\STACKER\STACKER.COM C:\STACVOL.DSK C:\STACVOL.000

        3. Press Ctrl+Z to save the file.

        4. Restart your computer.

       Locate your Stacker drives

        1. To locate your compressed data, change to the Stacker
           subdirectory by typing:

               CD\STACKER <Enter>

        2. Then type:

               STACKER <Enter>

Note the drive letter(s) associated with your STACVOL files.
In the following example, Stacker drives are E and F:

DRIVE C: was drive C: at boot time
DRIVE D: was drive D: at boot time
DRIVE E: was drive E: at boot time [C:\STACVOL.DSK =
               67.0MB ]
DRIVE F: was drive F: at boot time [C:\STACVOL.000 =
               67.0MB ]

Make a note of your compressed drives.

       Run UNSTACK

        1. Run UNSTACK on each of your compressed drives, working
backwards through the alphabet. For example, if you have
Stacker drives E and F, type:

               UNSTACK F: <Enter>

and follow the UNSTACK screens. After UNSTACK restarts your
           system, type:

               UNSTACK E: <Enter>

        2. After you have run UNSTACK on the last Stacker drive, you
will be prompted to "remove the Stacker driver from your
system?" Select the option "Remove Stacker."

       Install the updated Stacker files

        1. Before you install the updated Stacker files, make sure you
           have a startup disk.

        2. Run setup from Stacker Disk 1 to install the updated Stacker
           files.

        3. Respond to the Setup screens as you would normally. You
don't have to do anything out of the ordinary until after
Stacker reboots to access your Stacker drives.

        4. Your computer will stop responding (hang) when Stacker
reboots to access your Stacker drives. Insert your startup
disk in drive A and restart your computer.

       Insert /-LZS in STACKER.INI

Add the switch /-LZS to your STACKER.INI file to permanently
       eliminate the ROM BIOS failure.

        1. After starting from your startup disk, insert Stacker Disk 1
into drive A or B, and change to that drive.

        2. From the DOS prompt, type:

               \TOOLS\STACINI C: <Enter>

        3. Add the switch /-LZS to the beginning of the file. For
           example:

               /-LZS
               /DIR=c:\STACKER
               C:\STACVOL.000,NS
               C:\STACVOL.DSK,NS

        4. Press Ctrl+Z to save the file.
