       BACKGROUND

If Windows is already installed when you install Stacker 3.x,
Setup allows enough uncompressed space for the existing permanent
swap file (which must remain uncompressed). If you installed
Windows later or your permanent swap file wasn't large enough,
there won't be enough uncompressed space. You'll have to make
more uncompressed space to enlarge the existing swap file or to
create one for the first time.

Windows 3.1 will not assign a swap file to a logical device (such
as RAM drives or Stacker drives) so you need space on the
uncompressed drive for a Windows swap file. Windows requires that
the space dedicated to a swap file be physically contiguous (all
       in one complete unbroken piece).

       SOLUTION

Stacker lets you increase the uncompressed space on a system
after you have installed Stacker. Of course, this decreases the
Stacker drive size. If your Stacker drive has a total of 80 MB,
making 5 MB more uncompressed space decreases the Stacker drive
to 70 MB. You can use the STAC Toolbox or the DOS command line to
       change the Stacker drive size.

       Disable Disk Cache

Disk caching interferes with the process of changing the drive
size. Stacker can't disable all disk caches, so disable yours
       before you start.

The most common disk cache among Windows users is SMARTDRV.EXE.
Stacker can disable this one, but it doesn't always cancel
SMARTDRV.SYS or PCKWIK. When in doubt about your disk cache,
       disable it for this process.

       To disable a cache:

        1. Open your CONFIG.SYS file with any text editor ( DOS EDIT,
Windows SYSEDIT or your favorite one).
        2. Type:
               REM<space>
as the very first characters of the line that loads the
            cache.
        3. Save the file and exit to DOS.
        4. Open your AUTOEXEC.BAT file using the same editor.
        5. If a cache is loaded, type:
               REM<space>
as the very first characters of the line.
        6. Save the file and exit to DOS.

The following examples show how the lines might look when you get
       finished.

            CONFIG.SYS:
               REM DEVICE=C:\DOS\SMARTDRV.SYS 1024
            AUTOEXEC.BAT:
               REM C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV
After you have made the changes to your startup files (CONFIG.SYS
and/or AUTOEXEC.BAT), restart your system. Stacker will
synchronize the files and restart again if your C drive is
       compressed.

To make more uncompressed space using STAC Toolbox:

        1. At the DOS prompt, type STAC to open the Toolbox. (If you
get "Bad command or file name", the Stacker directory is not
in the path. Just change to the directory where the Stacker
program files are located and retype the command STAC.)
        2. Use the arrow keys to highlight Stacker Drive Size and press
            ENTER.
        3. If you have more than one Stacker drive, select which one
you wish to change and press ENTER.
        4. Use the down arrow to highlight More Uncompressed Space
            Available and press ENTER.
Follow the instructions on the screen as the Stacker
Optimizer, SDEFRAG, fully defragments your drive before it
can change the size. When the defragmentation is done,
you'll have to enter the amount of uncompressed space you
wish to have. You must enter the size in K (kilobytes), so
multiply the number of MB of uncompressed space you desire
by 1024. For example, for 4 MB, you would type 4096.
        5. Type the amount of space and press ENTER.
        6. Examine the summary of changes. The summary window offers
            these choices:
                 Perform changes on Stacker drive
                 Modify settings
                 Exit without changes
"Perform changes" modifies Stacker and tells you to press
ENTER to restart. The uncompressed space will appear on the
drive that swaps with the Stacker drive you modified.
"Exit" lets you exit the change process without modifying
            any Stacker drives.
"Modify settings" lets you change the size if you want.
        7. Use the arrow keys to highlight your choice and press ENTER.
For each MB you choose to uncompress, you will lose about
two MB from the Stacker drive you are modifying.
After the system restarts, you can reactivate your cache. Just
remove the REM that you inserted earlier and restart again.
Stacker will take care of updating the changes, and you will be
back to your former configuration with enough uncompressed space
for a swap file. Then use the appropriate steps in Windows 3.1 to
       create your swap file.

To make more uncompressed space using the SDEFRAG command:

        1. At the DOS prompt, type:
               SDEFRAG /GP <Enter>
