The National Physical Science Consortium offers a unique and exciting graduate
fellowship program for women and minorities in the physical sciences. Each
fellowship is worth from $ 150,000 up to $ 180,000.

The unique features are:

* Paid tuition and fees plus a substantial stipend for each academic year at
nationally recognized universities throughout the U.S.
* Paid summer employment and technical experience for at least two (2) years
from leading national employers in the U.S.
* Mentors on campus and at the worksite.
* A long-term commitment to each qualifying fellow for up to six (6) years.
* Opportunity to present cameos of your research at national meetings
* Build networking with leading scientists from both major research
	laboratories and universities.

Who may apply?

You may be eligible for a fellowship if you:

* Are a U.S. citizen;
* Are Black, Hispanic, Native American and/or female;
* Have an undergraduate academic standing as a senior with at least
	a 3.0 GPA.
* Are eligible to pursue graduate study at a participating NPSC
	member university.
* Are an entering or returning student.

What are the conditions of the award?

You must be accepted at a participating NPSC college or university, and
progress through a full time study program leading to a Ph.D. degree in the
physical sciences. NPSC requires that you work for an NPSC employer member for
the summer preceding and following the first year of graduate school.

How much is the award worth?

Your fellowship is worth from $150,000 up to $180,000. NPSC fellowships pay
tuition, fees and a stipend for each graduate year, plus you earn money through
the summer employment program. The initial stipend for years 1 and 2 is
$10,000 plus full tuition. Stipend for years 3 and 4 is $12,500/ year and
years 5 and 6 is $15,000/year. The exact value depends on your academic
standing, summer employer and graduate school.

Will my transportation expenses to the summer worksite be covered?

Yes, each fellow is reimbursed for travel to and from the worksite, usually on
the basis of coach class plane fares.

How long is the summer work period?

Normally it is 12 weeks, but small variations are possible by mutual agreement
between the fellow and employer.

Can I change summer employers?

This is possible only if the work assignment is unrelated to your field of
study (as determined by the NPSC Executive Director, the employer and you) and
if your original employer cannot find a suitable alternative assignment. In
such cases, the worksite transfer is made by the Executive Director.

Who will be my mentor at the worksite?

Your summer employer will select someone in your discipline or technical
program.

Application process

How can I apply?

Applications are available at the graduate offices of your college or
university, or at the address below. Send the completed application form to:

L. Nan Snow, Executive Director
National Physical Science Consortium
New Mexico State University
Box 30001,
Dept. 3NPS
Las Cruces, New Mexico 8800-0001

When should I apply?

Applications are due December 1, annually. Announcement of the awards will be
in the following January.

Am I restricted to any particular graduate school?

You may attend only member universities a listing is available in the last
section of this brochure.

Does NPSC pay the application fee for admission to graduate school?

No, you must pay the fee unless the graduate school agrees to waive it.
However, some schools have no charge for applications.

Am I guaranteed admission to member universities?

Each school has its own entrance requirements, and you must be accepted on your
own merits. Since none are required to admit you, it is best to apply to at
least three universities at the same time.

Am I restricted to any particular physical science discipline?

As an NPSC fellow, you may major in any physical science discipline that is
offered for graduate study at the member universities (as long as these
disciplines have been previously accepted by the NPSC Executive Director). For
specific details, call the NPSC Office.

How many academic hours must I carry each term?

This depends on the individual graduate school's requirements; however, each
NPSC fellow is expected to carry a full academic load and progress toward a
Ph.D. degree.

Who will be my mentor at graduate school?

For academic matters, it will be your department chairperson or someone
designated by the chairperson. This same person may be your academic advisor.

How do the member universities distribute stipends to fellows during the
academic year?

You will be paid a portion of your stipend on a bimonthly or monthly schedule
by the university in accordance with their regular graduate practices.

May I work as a researcher or teaching assistant while I attend graduate schoo1
as an NPSC fellow?

Many schools require that their graduate students perform some teaching or
research. If this is the case, it is recommended that you work no more than 9
hours per week. This work requires mutual agreement between school, student
and consortium.

Acceptance as an NPSC fellow

How are the NPSC fellows selected?

Applications are prescreened by a committee of university members. Then
employer members receive a copy of the screened applications, rate them for
their summer intern needs, and meet to select the participants. Because
participants must attend one of the member universities, we recommend that you
apply for admission to at least three member universities.

If I am selected, when does the fellowship go into effect?

Because the summer internship program is the initial phase of the program, when
you accept employment from the employer member, you become an NPSC fellow.
Continuation of your fellowship is contingent on your admission by a member
university and maintenance of good academic standing.

Special expenses or needs

What about medical expenses while attending graduate school?

In most cases, member universities do not cover your medical expenses. We
encourage you to take advantage of the medical insurance and services available
to the regular student body.

What about housing while I'm at the worksite and in graduate school?

We recommend that you search for suitable housing by contacting other fellows
and either the employer or the university's housing office. You are
responsible for paying for your housing from your summer earnings or stipend.

Where should I call if I have other questions?

Telephone the NPSC Office at (505) 646-6037 or (505) 646- 6038.
