Handling Zip files in Windows can be a chore. Many times you have to
run an external (DOS) program. I have tried several Windows unZIP
programs, and have always went back to my DOS program. That is until
now. WinZip v5.0 is an excellent program that handles ZIP, ARC, and
LHA compressed files. It will also delete compressed files. WinZip
has an online tutorial and context sensitive help, that can be
    accessed by pressing F1.

WinZip requires Windows 3.1 or Windows for Workgroups. Due to
incompatibilities, which the author is working on, not all of
WinZip's functions will work in the Windows 3.1 emulation box of
Windows/NT or OS/2. The internal features of WinZip will work fine
in these environments, but there is a problem running the external
programs mentioned below. The fixes for this problem should be
    released shortly.

WinZip will create a ZIP, add to a ZIP, or extract a ZIP file using
its internal ZIP features, without requiring the external Zip
program. There some restrictions where you will need an external
    program. These are:

    * Creating ZIPs that span multiple disks, files that are password
encrypted, or creating self-extracting (.EXE) ZIP files.
    * uncompressing files with ARC or LHA extensions.
    * Running a virus scanner.

For the above you will need the programs designed to work these
    archives.

Installation is easy. Just create a directory for WinZip, uncompress
the files into that directory, and run the program. Once started you
will see the opening screen. From here select options. Under options
you select various features to have WinZip work your way.

In confirmations you can opt to not have a dialog box prompt you on
an activity. For example when you choose to view a file, and you
turn off the prompt option, WinZip will bring the file up in the
default view (.BMP for PaintBrush, .TXT for Notepad, etc.).

Turning off the extract option will cause WinZip to uncompress the
files to the default extract directory. Choosing the Directories
option allows you to select default directories for: Startup,
Extract, Create, Work and Checkout directories. The Startup
directory is where you downloaded ZIPs or other compressed files are
stored. Extract is where you wish the files to go.

Checkout is a feature of WinZip that allows you to uncompress a file
in a temporary directory. It will also create a program group for
the compressed file. From this group you can select any of the icons
to either run or view. When you are done, and either close WinZip or
close the compressed file, WinZip offers you the option to delete
the group and directory where these files reside, while still
retaining the compressed file in the directory where it originated.

Creating a compressed file has never been easier. Click on New from
the toolbar. If you have selected a default Create directory, you
will be placed there. Type in the name of compressed file you wish
to create and click OK. Next you will be presented with a list of
files. Select the file(s) you wish to work with (for multiple files
hold down the CTRL key). The default is to add files, but you can
choose to move files or update a compressed file. There is also an
option that lets you select a compression method. After selecting
files, and pressing OK, the compressed file will be created. WinZip
    supports drag and drop.

Many people are concerned about contracting a virus. WinZip supports
a variety of virus scanners: Central Point Anti-Virus, Norton
Anti-Virus and SCAN from McAfee to name a few. It will recognize
these programs and set itself up accordingly. It will also work with
almost and DOS-based virus scan program, even the one in MS-DOS
6.0. WinZip will run the virus checker on a file, and then show you
the results on screen. You can copy this information to the
    clipboard.

With all the programs that pass my desk I do not get excited that
often. However, from the moment I started WinZip I was VERY
enthusiastic. WinZip has won numerous awards from top computer
magazines. I can see why. It can now the "CTM Editor's Choice Award"
to that list. This is of the best shareware utilities that I have
come across in a long time. Try it, and I am sure you will not be
disappointed either. Look for WINZIP.EXE on your favorite BBS. The
