Important Points When Using NUPop

Please read through this section before loading NUPop

* On the bottom of the screen is the Information bar. This line
gives you a short description about what the current
    choice means.
ie: Press ALT-G access the Group Menu
them menu will drop down and the first option will be
          highlighted.
the info bar will tell you what it is for - ie: Define
          group name
If you scroll (or Tab) to another choice the info bar will
     change.
When in doubt as to what your choice will do, look at the info
     bar.

*  Help
Press F1 at any time and help on the current choice will
          appear.
(When looking at a help screen, you can use the cursor keys
          to move through the help)
If at any time you want to learn more about a particular
topic press ALT-H to load the help menu - Use the
cursor and/or tab keys to move through the choices

*  Navigating NUPop
     Keyboard or Mouse
I will explain how to use NUPop with the keyboard. If
you have a mouse you can access the same menu's simply
by pointing and clinking on the choice.

* Two Types of Menus

There are two basic types of menus you will use

Pull Down Menus:

These are the menus that are accessed from the menu bar at
          the top of the screen.

File Edit Group MailBox Message Options Utilities

To access any of these choices hold down the ALT key and the
Highlighted character of the menu that you want.

ie: to load the Edit menu press the ALT key and then, while
still pressing the ALT key, press the E key. The Edit menu will
drop down with all of it's choices.

You can make choices one of 2 ways

     1) Use the cursor keys to move up/down the menu until your
choice is highlighted and then press Enter
     2) Press the key that is highlighted.
ie: you want to access the User option, press U.

NOTE: These are the only menus where you press only the
highlighted character to access the choice. In
the button menus - see below (and for the menu bar
               - see above) you will press the ALT key and the
               highlighted character.

NOTE: If an item on a menu is GRAY, that means that this option
     is not currently available.

Button Menus:

These are typically the secondary menus. (Meaning - to get
to these menu's you need to access one of the Pull Down menus
first)

Button menu's are actually windows. These menus are layered
on top of the main screen.
Below is an example of 2 Button menus.

The first Button menu (the full screen one behind the one in the
middle) is the IN MailBox menu.
The second Button menu (the one on top and in the middle) is the
     Choose MailBox menu.

The Buttons in the Choose MailBox menu are the OK and the Cancel
choices. (I've also pointed out several others in the IN menu)

                     Navigating Button Menus

To move to the next choice press the TAB key.

DO NOT press the Enter key until you have finished making
changes.
In Button menu's the Enter key accepts any changes made and then
closes the menu. We will work through an example when we load
NUPop.

HINT: If you have a colored monitor the default option (ie: Okay
in most cases) will be printed in light blue characters.
ie: OK is the default. K is the highlighted key, but O is
light blue instead of the normal white.

* Ooops - If you choose the wrong menu or make an error, you
always have one of two options:
          Choose the Cancel Button or
          Press the Esc (Escape) key.

Both of these options will cancel the current changes and
back up to the previous menu.

                         Starting NUPop

Now its time to load up NUPop
     Turn on your PC
Place your NUPop disk in the a drive
(unless you are running it from home, then change to your
          NUPop directory)
     Lab Use
          Type
               a: <Enter> ( <Enter> refers to the enter key )
               NUPop <Enter>
Note: Use the right drive for your disk
ie: if you have a 3 1/2 disk you will probably need to
use the b drive instead of the a drive.
     Home Use
          Type
               c: <Enter>
               cd\nupop <Enter>
               nupop <Enter>

                   Telling NUPop Who You Are

The first time you load NUPop, you will be presented with a
screen similar to this one

               Getting Familiar with your Mailbox

NUPop creates 4 main MailBoxes, IN, OUT, SENT, TRASH. NUPop then
automatically places each piece of mail in the appropriate
mailbox. There may be times that you want to retrieve an article
from the trash, sent, or out box, so that you can send it again,
or you may simply want to save the message (ie you deleted it on
accident)

Press ALT-B, this will bring up the MailBox menu

So you just got a message from your buddy and now you want to
mail her a message back. Well instead of using the Compose
option, you can press ALT-R. This option is available when you
are reading a message. (look back at the previous section to see
an example)

You are now in the Composer menu (after having pressed ALT-R)

You will notice 2 differences.
     1) The To: section is already filled in with the address
of the person who sent you mail.
     2) The text of the message you were previously reading has
been placed in - Text section of your new message

You will notice that each line of the message is
preceded by a >. If you want you can include some of
your friend's message in your text to refresh their
          memory.
ie: see text at the end of the above example (this
is text I typed in as a reply to the previous
                    comment)
This is extremely useful for reminding people what they
               were talking about.

If you don't want to include any of this text simply
mark the beginning of the block and move to the
end and then delete the block.

NOTE: If you find that you never want to use the person's text in
your message, there is a way to turn off this option (see
     Options section)

and then press ALT-K.

Sending a File with your Mail

Say you are working on a paper and you want to send your teacher
a copy of the paper so he/she can look it over. To do this you
need to enclose a file with your message.

First you begin your message as you normally would, then you
choose the option Enclose a file.

This menu present you with 4 choices. If you are sending a file
that was created with a word processor (ie: wordperfect,
microsoft word) then you need to select Add Binhex. If you are
sending a plain text file (ascii) then you can select any of the
three Add choices.

Note: If you are sending a file created on a word processor, make
sure the person receiving it can read the file. If you are
unsure, use your word processor to save the files as a plain text
file. (ascii)

After you make your initial choice you will be presented with a
directory listing of the available files. This directory
operates in much the same way as most word processors.

The options menu (ALT-O) will change your configuration. (ie: if
you want NUPop to Queue outgoing messages or automatic send, if
you want it to acquire mail when you start, if you want to
acquire mail automatically after you send some mail, etc) To
explore these options and others in the configuration menu, look
through them, and examine the info bar at each option as you
scroll/Tab through them. Also don't forget the ONLINE help.
Remember - just press F1 at any choice and it will give you help
