Thanks for using the BOOKUP viewer as your chess study tool! We are
happy to do whatever it takes to make your computer chess study time
more effective.

This file accompanies the BOOKUP Viewer version 2.0.

=====================================================================
Purpose...

This Viewer program is copyrighted by the BOOKUP corporation but you
may distribute copies of it freely provided all of the files are
included and unmodified.

The purpose of the Viewer program is to allow anyone to read chess
books created by BOOKUP 8.x without having to invest in the complete
program.

=====================================================================
FILES=30

Without this line (or a similar one) in your CONFIG.SYS file, the
Viewer may not run properly. Windows may require a setting greater
than 30.

=====================================================================
Low Memory?

The Viewer signals a lack of memory by making a chirping sound. If
you should hear this sound after requesting a certain feature, try
to free up more RAM memory and/or hard disk space and then run the
program again.

Recommended memory is 520K, although most of the Viewer's features
will work with much less.

Recommended free hard disk space is 1.2MB while the program is
running. Keep in mind that Windows often uses free hard disk space.

The memory required by the Viewer is *below* 640K. With DOS 5
and DOS 6 you can tell how much memory is available by typing
MEM at the DOS prompt and reading the line showing the "largest
executable program size."

We recommend DOS 5 or 6 because of the excellent memory management
and disk caching.

=====================================================================
Using the program

The Viewer program is essentially a 'read-only' version of BOOKUP 8.5
for DOS. It is beyond the scope of this file to describe the many
features of BOOKUP.

The Viewer requires VGA graphics and a mouse.

Here is what you can do with the BOOKUP Viewer:

 - You can open and view any book in BOOKUP 8.x format. Just select
   Open Book from the File menu. Any books-on-disk will be listed.
   Highlight the book you want and press OK. (You can also double-
   click on a book.) Click the directory button to look at books
   in another directory.

 - You can read a sample-sized opening book that comes with the
   Viewer. This book is a fraction of the size of our actual books.

 - Get more information about the program and the book you have open
   by selecting About Viewer... from the File menu.

 - Use the VCR control panel to navigate through the chess analysis.
   The first button 'rewinds' the moves back to the starting
   position. The second button rewinds moves back to the last
   position that had a choice of moves. The third button takes back
   a single move ply. The fourth button pauses the animation of a
   game. The fifth button plays the highlighted candidate. The
   sixth button plays through the analysis until there is a choice of
   moves. The seventh button goes directly to the end of a loaded
   game (if any).

 - You can load any recorded games that might be in the book and
   animate them on the screen.

 - You can create PCX files of any diagram in the book by selecting
   Create PCX... from the More menu.

 - You can export any line in a book by selecting Export Game from
   the Export menu. Use the Export Settings... to control the format
   of the exported text. This feature can export embedded comments
   in many different formats and really shows off the desktop
   publishing capability of BOOKUP.

 - You can test the interface of BOOKUP without having to purchase
   the product. Changes to the diacritics and Informant symbols
   won't be saved in the book but the Viewer can actually display
   the book faster than BOOKUP because the book is opened read-only.

 - You can view all the annotations in a book by pressing the Tab
   key or clicking in the comment area and then using the up and down
   arrow keys to scroll through the text.

 - You can flip the board and use the Preferences... to set the speed
   of animation.

 - You can probably do a lot more than we thought to include in this
   file!
