You can do this now. The Rip command $>TOP.RIP$ would paint your Top
menu using a file on the users' hard drive. There are some probems with
this however (see my post subject "Rip On Rip Off"). Hopefully someone
has an answer.

WHY would you shut off the mouse in a PAINT program??? Just wondering
because if all you want is to view it use one of the rip list programes.
They work like that nice dos based LIST program but does RIP.

It could be several things.
1. It was a complex picture and you slow down for the quality.
exanple.. In ansi draw a plain red box that fills have the screen, now
draw a the same plain red box on the other half with rip. what was the
speed there.... ok we just conpaired an apple with an apple..
now draw a black screen with sone * for stars in ansi on the first heave,
and on the bottom half put what looks like a real random star field. Oh my
god it looks so nice but it's slow.. Well thats one way it may be slow.
2. make sure the modem is running error free at 14.4 and not realy running
at 300cps<g>
3. 486 hmmm make sure the computer systemis working correctly..After all
you are drawing the grapics on you computer not recieving them over the
phone line<g>.

Hope this help to understand how speed works. Simple RIP screens are So
FAST but everyone wants to show off because it's so new and looks so good
compaired to the ansi screens that sometimes we get carried away.

Actually, there is another way to do this. RIP supports "local file
playback" with the text variable $>file$ (where "file" would be the file
name in question). You can embed this in the command values of a
button, along with any other commands you want executed. Of course, just
as for a custom set of icons, your users would need these scenes on
their drive.

DU>why?

When RIP fills a region, it does so until it hits the fill border color
- that's how it knows when to stop. So, there's two possiblities here:

     1) You don't have the fill border color set to the correct color.
For example, if you wanted to fill a yellow rectangle with blue,
you'd set the fill color to blue, and the fill border to yellow.

     2) You've got a "hole" in the surrounding regions, which causes the
fill to continue. Just *one* pixel is enough! Again, if you
had a yellow rectangle, but somehow it had a pixel missing, or a
different color, then the blue fill would "spill out" thru it.

It needs a distinct defined color on which to stop the fill, and that
color should form a complete enclosed area.

I have tried RIP at 2400. It draws screens very well at that speed. The
only problem with RIP at 2400 (in my estimation) is that you are still
stuck with 2400 file transfers. The user will have fast screens but
s-l-o-w file transfers. That will probably be frustrating for the user.

screen that calls for a fill somewhere on the screen, it fills the WHOLE
screen with that colour, instead of the proper area... does anyone know
 why?
 ;

Perhaps a fill command in the screen with exactly the same coordinates
as the lines which are used for the fill border.
If it misses one coordinate (error in a line eg.) it uses the outside
screen as the filling border.
Solution could then be to move the filling point more to the middle of
the area to be filled (grid off).

Tis no longer a secret. Actually they were giving that advice at
Telegraphix after I called them. Still though I think that there should
be another way of doing it. And if there isn't is there a program that
takes a full screen picture and turns it into a series of icons?
 ;

Hi Cleaver,

It still is a hell of a job to create screen filling icons (not to
mention in the correct colours).
Biggest problem is the 64Kbyte limit for the icons.
If you use B/W pictures you can fill a complete screen with only two
icons which are connected in the centre of the screen.
But......it still is ...... :-(

I am having trouble getting a POP UP menu. I want to leave the menu

 ;

There are a few shareware icon conversion programs, but as far as I know
there is only one paintprogram (Telegraphix) which still is very
rudimentary (lousy icon editor with a stupid memory limit eg).

For your POP UP problem I suggest you chech the following:
First line in your POP Screen should contain a Save to the Clipboard in
the size of the pop screen) like this:
Query var: MODE=0 $STW$ Save text window
Query var: MODE=0 $SMF$ Save mouse fields
Query var: MODE=0 $SCB$ Save clipboard

Actual RIP for the POP UP
...
...
In the Exit commands of the POP UP you should have a restoration of the
original screen like:

$RTW$ Restore text window
$RMF$ Restore Mouse fields
$PCB$ Paint clipboard
$RCB$ Restore Clipboard

Just add all these var's into all button text's which exit your POP UP
like:

<>Exit to previous level<>X`M$RTW$$RMF$$PCB$$RCB$$PHASER$

BTW pages 15-17 in the RIP add on manual give a good example from the
users online pop up !!!

Tel-FX being incorporated into other Bulletin Board types (Not just
Roboboard)... in my opinion it is far superior to RIP, because it has
better resolution, higher number of colors, and already has soundblaster
support... If you like RIP look at RoboBOARD F/X. This time they are
releasing the Graphics Code with it so other BBS programs can
incorporate TelFX instead of RIP.

Unknown Directory Specifer:

Hi Steve,

Try Tessier's or Prostar, they both carry the STR collection disk with a
complete set of screens for MBBS (from my hand).
If you want specific screens just contact SYSOP@STR for the going rate

I'd be interested in seeing this RIP scene... can you upload it to this
forum? I myself haven't used Tombartist (we use RIPaint here at GComm)
- it's possible it's saving your scene in some fashion that's causing
RIPterm to improperly interpet the commands. I'd like to bring the
scene up in RIPaint, and have a look at it.

You might try looking to see the actual x,y coordinates of the fill
point - it's possible it's sitting "right on the edge" of your intended
fill region. This might look ok in Tombartist, but RIPterm could be
reacting differently.

When you upgraded, did you also upgrade the RIPAINT.DLL? There's a
seperate patch for that in the file library. It's possible that you're
just "out of synch".

Have you loaded your mouse driver before starting Ripaint? It won't
load it automatically for you and if it's not there you _will_ get the
"NO MOUSE FOUND" error. If the driver is the common Microsoft driver,
and it's in your path just try typing MOUSE before attempting to load
Ripaint. The other possibility is that you have a modem or other serial
device configured for the same port although a symtom of this problem
usually does not show up till you run the other device.

Bill,

Local file playback has a lot of potential but I am having some trouble
with it.

My problem is this: if a button command calls a local Rip file that is
a copy of my menu ( <>Top Menu<> $>TOP.RIP$ ) the menu paints fine and fast
but the user is not transported to the TOP page. If I use all "/go"
commands on my menu the buttons will work even if the user is still on
the EMAIL page. ...but this is not so good! A user entering keyboard
characters in the text window, thinking they are on the TOP page, gets
surprised and confused.

If I put "/go top" in my button command along with $>top.rip$ the menu
paints twice (slowly over the 2400 baud modem and then much faster from
the local hard drive).

Is there anyway to "/go top" without painting the MBBS top.rip file?

Unfortunately... kinda like the "Apple Experience" their release of the
Graphics code is a bit late. Now that RIP is incorporated into nearly
every bbs platform out there they have a huge mountain to climb before
they can dream of having the impact RIP does already.

Why don't more people learn from the IBM experience?

Well, I upgraded via the disks sent to me from Galacticomm and
then after talking to tech support I copied a number of .DLLs from the
RIPAINT directory to the BBSV6 directory to no avail. When I spoke with
Shane yesterday he said that there is an apparent problem with some of
the .DLLs that will have to be fixed. This problem is rather strange
since noone, including TeleGrafix, seems to have heard of it before.

hi there!

I am putting up a BBS in France.& I would like to use Rip graphics at

The PB is I don't want to get involved in big developments at this time.
So,I need to "rip" qwk mail, dial out ,internet gwy,fax on line features.
If anybody has the trick, I would go for a A:install.

I would also like to find a "cheap"Internet provider in Europe.France

Also, how to have FTP link on the Major BBS which has only a gatew

JRadigan is working on the Amiga version of RIP for Terminus. I was
talking to him about a week or so ago. He said it's gonna be a while. =(
Now, the fun part is gonna be when RIP 2.0 comes out, all these
thoughtless PC programmers forgot that OTHER computers (Amiga & Mac)
don't use SoundBlaster ( <=== LAME!!! ), they have digitaly recorded
sounds... Which means it will be okay, unless they start supporting more
than 4 instruments at one time... =)

But, I really don't want RIP music. Metallica, Dream Theater, Peal Jam,
Alice in Chains, will probably blow it away (I'm just guessing here)...

HI ,
I noticed that the `H is in a few screens. How is that different than
using the `M  for enter.

I still can't find many of the generic screens, like the rip screen that
is used for Tele_conference, and the one used when you first get into
the LIBRARY menu. PLEASE HELP!

I am having trouble finding the generic TELE-Conference screen. Do you
know a file name I can search for in the bbsmajor.msg file. While I am
on the subject, is there a way to have more than one teleconference
 screen(rip screen).
 ;
Hi Snowdog,

You can find the introscreen for teleconference in GALETL.MSG as the
first entry (called intro)
Just create a complete introscreen in RIP there and you're in business.
If you want to see how I did it feel free to log in to STER BBS in the
Netherlands (+31 1880 40035).
It's even better to reroute all incoming globals to the top of your
screens as we do, as it sure give a professional look to the way the
system reports it's messages to the user without disrupting the original
screen.
If you need more just give me a yell !!

if the number is = n1n2n3

But alas this only works for numbers below 256...what am I doing wrong?

I dont know. There is one strange thing about the spreading of
RIPscrip. It seems to be REALLY REALLY common in some places, and
REALLY REALLY uncommon in others. Out here in St.Louis there arent that
many RIP boards at ALL, and quite a few RoboBoards. I think if they
start taking territories there might be a chance that RIP will slowly be
defeated...

I know RIP is evolving, a computer paper here in Canada (I know we got
it in Western Canada) had an interview with the president of TeleGrapix
and he mentioned some of the new features, I really CAN'T wait for
RIPterm and RIPaint 2.0 to be released! I wish I had the paper here I
would quote some things. I know off the top of my hand there is
Soundblaster support (and other mediums for other platforms), TIFF and
JPEG support and a color palette of 16.7 Million colors..

(I hope I didnt remember these wrong or screw up) I I did I apologize
 to the Telegrahpix people!)

PS is anyone wants me to I will dig up the paper and type in some of
the interesting tidbits if people are interested!

I would like to see how the RIP music is going to work but not sure if I
will use it or not.

I guess how good it (the music) is will all depend on who you get to do
the music for you. My wife was a major in music and has been in a band
for over 14 years. She also writes music (at times) and plays clasical
on the piano quite well. I have been messing a bit with my sound
blaster and a sequencer so never know what sort of fun stuff could be
came up with.

As for systems like the amiga I seem to remember that most MOD files
that I can play on my soundblaster came from the AMIGA in the 1st place.

Take care
