SPITFIRE v3.5 DEVELOPMENT
-------------------------

As many of you are aware, SPITFIRE v3.5 is currently in its
developmental stages. There is no doubt in my mind that many of you
have your very own special feature that you would like to see added
to SPITFIRE. I am also sure that many of you would like to help with
the development of SPITFIRE v3.5. This is probably going to sound a
bit hard and uncaring but my intent is the opposite. Here goes
(smiling). One the best ways to help the SPITFIRE v3.5 development
is to 'not' ask to beta test and to 'not' ask for your own special
little feature. It isn't that I don't want your help because I
actually do, however, if everyone asks to test and asks for there
special little feature to be added, then I spend hours answering your
message and not writing code. Thank you.

 SPITFIRE REGISTERED BBS STATISTICS
;

Listed below are the active registered SPITFIRE boards state by
state and country by country. We are providing the number of SPITFIRE
boards per state/country which were active at the end of 1991, 1992
and 1993 for comparison purposes. These statistics may not be 100%
accurate but they are compiled using the most up to date information
that we have. These statistics are arrived at by using only those
boards operating with SPITFIRE v3.3 and SPITFIRE v3.4. So in other
words, we assume any Sysop who has not upgraded to v3.3 or v3.4 are
no longer operating a board or is no longer operating SPITFIRE.
Therefore those boards are not calculated in this data even though we
are aware of some SPITFIRE boards operating with older versions.

Canada, bragging about 148 active SPITFIRE boards, nearly passed
the great state of California, bragging about 150 active SPITFIRE
boards. Let's not forget 3rd place Texas, bragging about 136 active
SPITFIRE boards.

We feel it is important to note that SPITFIRE has been
registered 2803 times and according to our information 1791 of
these boards are still active. If my calculations are correct,
this means there is a 64% success rate among SPITFIRE Sysops.

Time is very quickly running out in regard to upgrading to
SPITFIRE v3.4. In the event you know of someone who has not
upgraded, you should tell them that they are going to loose
their SPITFIRE upgrade privileges if they do not upgrade.
Thank you.

Until next time, may God bless you...

BUFFALO CREEK SOFTWARE'S SPITFIRE UTILITY UPDATES
;

Buffalo Creek Software just recently released three new SPITFIRE
utilities. These utilities are available to all registered SPITFIRE
Sysops at no cost. (Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! from Mike
Woltz and Buffalo Creek Software) Below, is a brief description of
each of the new SPITFIRE utilities:

SFTSTUSR - SPITFIRE TEST USER
-----------------------------

SFTSTUSR was written for the purpose of testing the integrity of
SPITFIRE's SFUSERS.DAT file. SFTSTUSR will read through each record,
testing the validity of the information contained in each field of
the caller database. In testing SFUSERS.DAT, SFTSTUSR verifies that
string fields do not exceed their length limit, values fall within
predetermined ranges, Boolean fields are set to true or false, etc.
and errors are reported.

Originally designed to assist SF Sysops recovering from a system
crash, SFTSTUSR was further expanded so that it could be run from
a batch file and thus set up as a scheduled event within SPITFIRE
to ensure the integrity of the caller database is maintained. When
executed from DOS, SFTSTUSR will report any error messages to the
screen and provides the opportunity for the Sysop to mark the record
for deletion. When run as a scheduled event, any error messages are
written to SPITFIRE's HEYSYSOP.LOG.

SFCDFA - SPITFIRE CD-ROM FILE AREA
----------------------------------

SFCDFA was written to assist SPITFIRE Sysops in adding and/or
removing CD-Rom drive file areas to SPITFIRE's SFFAREA.DAT.
SFCDFA will add a file area to SPITFIRE for each directory
located off of the CD-Rom's root directory. The Sysop uses
command line parameters to designate the CD-Rom drive letter and
to configure the upload path for the file areas and the security
which will be required to access the file areas. SFCDFA defaults
all other information in the File Area record and can be updated,
if desired, from the SPITFIRE "Ready..." prompt of from the Sysop
utilities menu when logged onto the BBS.

SFCDFA makes quick easy work of adding a CD-Rom's 50 to 75 file
areas to SPITFIRE. That in itself makes this utility a real
asset to any SPITFIRE BBS with a CD-Rom. However, using the command
line parameter PURGEDRIVE, SFCDFA can also remove any file areas
associated with a CD-Rom enabling Sysops with multiple CD-Rom
disks and a single CD-Rom drive to quickly and easily switch
between CD-Roms. SFCDFA truly minimizes the time required for
adding or switching between CD-Roms on a SPITFIRE BBS!

SFDIZ - SPITFIRE FILE_ID.DIZ DESCRIPTION UPDATER
------------------------------------------------

SFDIZ is a SPITFIRE utility which will replace an existing
SFFILES.BBS file description with a ZIP's FILE_ID.DIZ, if it
exists within the archive. SFDIZ will not process any file area
which has been configured as a CD-Rom file area. With this
exception, the Sysop is prompted with each file area as to
whether the description in SFFILES.BBS should be modified using
the description contained in the FILE_ID.DIZ file.

SPITFIRE v3.4's file description line is limited to 255
characters. SFDIZ, used without any command line parameters,
will not remove the "Uploaded By..." line from the file description
for Sysop who wish to have this remain a part of the file description.
However, by using the /R command line parameter, SFDIZ will remove
the "Uploaded By..." information, allowing more of the FILE_ID.DIZ
description to be included in the SFFILES.BBS file description. It
should also be noted, SFFILES.ORG is created as a backup copy of your
original SFFILES.BBS as a precautionary measure.

In addition to updating the description, SFDIZ will also update
the file size and test to make sure each file in the listing exists
on the drive. If SFDIZ encounters a file listing in SFFILES.BBS
where the file does not exist on the drive, the Sysop is prompted
as to whether the file should be removed from the listing.
SFDIZ will include as much of the FILE_ID.DIZ

BUFFALO CREEK SPITFIRE UTILITY REVISIONS
----------------------------------------

In addition to the new utilities described above, the following
utilities were revised.

BCSUTI - V1.1 December 14, 1993
-------------------------------
Kip Compton, author of Postlink, released a new version of his
netmail software. The modifications made to Postlink caused BCSUTI
to no longer work properly with Postlink. BCSUTI was revised so
that it would be compatible with the new release of Postlink.

SFTOPTEN - V1.21 December 18, 1993
----------------------------------
SFTOPTEN was revised to utilize a registration key file, SFTOPTEN.KEY.

FILES_SF - V1.2 December 25, 1993
---------------------------------
FILES_SF is a utility to convert CD-Rom file listings, FILES.BBS,
to SPITFIRE's SFFILES<x>.BBS. FILES.BBS has not become standardized
and uses a variety of formats. FILES_SF was upgraded to work some
of the additional FILES.BBS formats.

LAKOTA - V1.2 December 26, 1993
--------------------------------
LAKOTA was revised so that it no longer changes to the work directory
it creates for processing uploaded .REP packets. This should eliminate
problems for those who placed DSZ, PKZIP and PKUNZIP in the SPITFIRE
home directory rather than including the directory where these files
reside in their path statement.

SFMKLIST - V2.2 December 28, 1993
----------------------------------
SFMKLIST was changed to properly convert to the SPITFIRE v3.5
SFFILES.BBS format.

͸
SFREQUEST - SPITFIRE CD-ROM FILE REQUESTER
;

Sysops who have multiple CD-Rom disks and a single CD-Rom
drive will find SFREQUEST (SFREQ098) an invaluable asset to
their BBS. SFREQUEST can be set up as a door or Sysop
configurable command and allows callers to make file requests
from CD-Rom disks which are currently offline. SFREQUEST
will notify the caller when they enter the door if they have
fill requests awaiting download.

SFREQ098 is actually two complete programs. SFREQUEST, of
course, is the door program which allows the caller to request
files from offline CD-Rom disks. Using SFREQUEST callers can
list files on a CD-Rom by file area, perform fast text searches
based on user defined criteria, tag files which they wish to
request for download, and edit their file request queue.

The other program included in SFREQ098 is FILLREQS. This is
the Sysop's tool for handling the files requested by their
callers. FILLREQS provides Sysops with the ability to edit file
requests, fill their caller's request, and/or remove requested
files which have been downloaded.

SFREQ098 supports up to 99 CD-Rom disks with up to 250 file areas
per disk. In addition, SFREQ098 offers support for ASCII, ANSI and
RIP graphics, multi-node BBS operation, Com port 1 through 8, and
multi-line descriptions in the format of SFFILES.BBS. The Sysop
can configure the security required to request files from each disk
and even allow callers with a lower security the capability of
previewing file areas on the CD-Rom disk.

The shareware version of SFREQ098 is fully functional.
However, the registered version does provide some additional
features. In the unregistered version, the caller is limited to
two file requests while in the registered version a caller may
request up to 250 files. Also, the registered version offers a
complete SFREQUEST door activity log to be written to a
configured text file (such as SPITFIRE's CALLER.TMP file).
Another enhancement in the registered version of SFREQ098 is
that it will create a message to callers when their requests
have been filled.

SFREQ098 is written by Richard LeMaster. Registration for
both programs included in SRE098 is $15, which includes free
upgrades for all future versions.

 RIPNET
;

SPITFIRE Sysops interested in improving their RIP creations,
seeing other user's artwork, and receiving general help in using
RIP with SPITFIRE will be interested to know that RIPnet!, the
mail network devoted to all RIP graphics, carries a SPITFIRE BBS
RIP Support Echo. In it, SPITFIRE Sysops can find answers to
RIP questions that concern SPITFIRE, learn about new releases of
RIP compatible SPITFIRE 3rd party programs, and enjoy chatting
with SPITFIRE Sysops from all over the country and world.

RIPnet! currently uses Fidonet style messaging, and is being
carried to more than 150 systems all across the United States,
Australia, and Europe. (the net is currently only 2 months
old.) Besides SPITFIRE support, there are conferences available
for general chatting, door game discussion, RIP art posting
(adult and general), and other non-important BBS support <grin>.
RIPnet! is also being gated into SLNet and WildNet.

Interested Sysops can find information on joining RIPnet on
Buffalo Creek BBS or The Far Side BBS (616/894-5909), under the

 SPITFIRE BOARD-OF-THE-MONTH
;

                                Rick Gross
                              Cess Pool BBS
                               LaGrange, IL
                               708-352-9231

Welp, it is easy to find a place to start, because it hasn't
been all that long ago that the Cess Pool started up. I bought
my first computer in May 1992 with no idea what to do when I
first turned it on. As I got a few games on her, I thought this
would be a good time to get a modem. After settling that and
hooking onto a BBS that is 1 block from my house (RBBS of
Chicago) I knew what I wanted to do with my computer time.
After a month of be a modem user, I down loaded 5 or 6 BBS
softwares. PCBoard and Wildcat come to mind. I also came
across a copy of SPITFIRE 3.1 set it up with all the others.
Since I didn't know what was good or what was bad I started out
to get help from other Sysops running the same software. I came
across Bob Malus who was running SPITFIRE and I logged onto his
BBS, trying to get him to help. One night after a week of
trying to setup SF, I called his BBS in search of yet more help,
he invited me to a SPITFIRE Chicago Area Sysops Assoc. meeting
and he went on to tell me it started in 15 minutes, so off I
went meeting about 30 SF Sysops that were all willing to help. I
went home that night with the feeling that SPITFIRE was a
family, and I wanted to be a part of that. I went to my
computer that night, called Buffalo Creek and registered over
the phone.

Since then I have met some the greatest Sysops and have made
many friends. It seems to getting bigger every month as SF is
growing really fast in the Chicago area.

The Cess Pool has grown pretty rapidly, in that since October
1992, I went From a 386-dx33 with 130 meg drive to 486-dx40
networked with a 368-dx40, over 700 meg of drive space and a
CD-ROM. I have no co-Sysop, just me! Cess Pool is mainly
files, doors, and mail. Cess Pool Has added FidoNet and
CircuitNet. I have also started the Northern Ill Gamers Net for
local Sysops.

Future projects may include a second node (building the
machine now) and a possible hook up to the Internet.

I would like to thank all the folks at Buffalo Creek and
foremost Mike for taking the time to meet with me when he was in
town. We have had some good laughs. Also Jerry Witwicki of
Uncle Bobs and Brian Carlson of Chicken Coop, as I couldn't have
gotten here from there without them. I haven't meet a SF Sysop
yet that wouldn't help another sf Sysop out, to me thats what
keeps it all together.

 SYSOP-OF-THE-MONTH
;

                         David Pierron
                         Wombat's Wagon
                        Philadelphia, PA
                          215-331-2590

The call came at 19:00 EST January 2, 1994. Mike Woltz,
author of SPITFIRE, called to inform me that I would be the
first Sysop of the Month for the year Nineteen Hundred and
Ninety Four. Wow! What a surprise...

Well, first I'll tell you how I got started in the BBS arena.
I got a copy of RBBS-PC and worked and worked at it to make it
answer the phone. Booting the configure program, then running
it to see the results. Booting the configure program, and then
seeing the results. Begging my brother to call me long distance
from New Jersey to see if everything worked. To make a long
story short, after a couple weeks of work, and dropping carrier
on my brother by mistakingly hitting CTRL-C instead of ALT-C, I
tried SPITFIRE v3.0 shareware on September 30, 1990.

In the time it took me to unzip the SF30-1.ZIP archive and
run the SF.BAT file that was supplied, I was in 20 minutes at
the same point I was with RBBS-PC after weeks and hours of work!
Needless to say, the DEL RBBS-PC command came shortly after the
PKUNZIP SF30-1 command. And I have been running SPITFIRE ever
since!

I brought up Wombat's Wagon as a FREE board with no
limitations to the caller but TIME. As a BBS caller, I know
what it's like to try to upload a file that's already on EVERY
BBS you call. I didn't want there to be any ratios or any
pressure on the caller. I wanted Wombat's Wagon to be a place
where people could visit, trade files, messages, whatever, and
not feel obligated to have to leave something in return. No
reason for that, in my opinion. We share information, that's
good enough for me. Although, I do accept donations to the
board to help cover the phone bills (the nightly long distance
CircuitNet mail call and the 3 phone lines dedicated to the
BBS).

I feel I went through stages as a SPITFIRE Sysop and have
basically decided to maintain a low profile; just run my board
and have a good time at it. Sysops can get a little too caught
up in it all sometimes, and I've decided that I wouldn't let the
board run my life as much as it did after I first brought it up.
I remember not wanting to go out for fear the board would hang
or something. It took a while, but I got through that. Then
there's those certain callers that should not be allowed to have
access to a modem that can really put a damper on your Sysop
enthusiasm. And finally, some Sysops out there that do things a
bit differently than you do, and sometimes they're more than
happy to tell you how you should be doing it yourself.

I also enjoy programming. Most of the programs that I've
released as shareware have been for SPITFIRE. I started with
simple things and gradually moved to the more complex, covering
many different aspects of SPITFIRE. I have also written various
other programs for myself, such as a program to manage my
wedding. I know that nothing I've written is apt to make me a
billionaire. Therefore, I can't see charging other SPITFIRE
Sysops to register the programs I've written. I've enjoyed
writing the programs, and I just want to share them. Because a
lot of thought and time has gone into them, I don't release the
source code, but I think that I'm helping out some SPITFIRE
Sysops that don't have the $10 here and there to register the
little simple programs that round out the SPITFIRE Bulletin
Board. Evidently others agree, since I have been swamped with
requests! It was taking so much time that I ended up writing a
door program so that SPITFIRE Sysops can call the BBS and
register their programs online while they wait. Works out well
for me and for the SPITFIRE Sysop who doesn't like to wait for a
registered version to come in the mail or be ready for download.
It's instantaneous! I hope that SPITFIRE Sysops enjoy running
my utilities and I hope that they round out each and every
SPITFIRE BBS that they run on.

Kelly (my new bride) and I are working on our own business.
Kelly Computers, Inc. What I first thought of as a "toy" has
now become my living. We're closing out our first year of
business, and we've done pretty good considering. We're trying
to make it on our own as newlyweds with our new business selling
hardware and honesty, wish us luck, cause we're gonna need it!
<G> Hey! If'n you need anything, give us a call at
215-338-7800. We ship anywhere in the world!

In closing, as in all of my utility DOC files, I thank Mike
Woltz for his 14" window into the world. If it weren't for
SPITFIRE, I know my life would have been different. SPITFIRE
has brought many people to my monitor, and has rounded out my
life in a much better way. It has been with Mike Woltz's
SPITFIRE that I have met many fascinating people all over the
world. Mike Woltz is a human being who wrote an excellent
Bulletin Board System called SPITFIRE. He is not MicroSoft, or
Novell, or some other corporation... He is simply a guy that
has a PC in a room in his home. He took the time to write
SPITFIRE, and also takes the time to answer thousands of
questions, read thousands of requests, thousands of complaints,
PLUS run a BBS at the same time, you can see that Mike Woltz is
an extraordinary individual. I hope this isn't too creamy, or
laying it on thick,.. but if you sit back and think for a second
what this is, you should just mutter the word - 'wow',... I
think it's truly amazing that Mike can keep up with it all! And
I thank him again for changing my life for the better.

I never thought that I'd be a SPITFIRE Sysop of the month.
It's truly an honor, and I'd like to think that I support
SPITFIRE 100% through helping other SPITFIRE Sysops and
potential future SPITFIRE Sysops, and writing my utilities to
supplement SPITFIRE's operation.

Have a Happy 1994!

In addition, there were 6 new private SPITFIRE BBS Systems
registered. These private SPITFIRE BBS's included registrations
from: West Des Moines, Iowa; Memphis, Tennessee; San Jose,
California; Erie, Pennsylvania; Belgium; and Mantua, New Jersey.

There were 19 registrations for whom registration information was
incomplete. These included BBS's in: Huntsville, Texas; Mt. Home,
Idaho; Des Moines, Iowa; Columbus, Ohio; Amsterdam, Netherlands;
Laurel, Mississippi; Longview, Texas; L'Epiphanie, Quebec, Canada;
Windsor, Ontario, Canada; Greensboro, North Carolina; Blue Grass,
Iowa; Newbury, Ontario, Canada; Brunswick, Georgia; Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania; Junction City, Kansas; Dallas, Texas; Zandvoort,
Holland; Pembrooke, Ontario, Canada and Des Moines, Iowa.

The increase in registrations where information is incomplete is
largely due to Buffalo Creek's Software's policy of accepting on-line
Mastercard and Visa credit card registrations.
