       INTRODUCTION
       ------------

Newland is a simulation of civilizations that players
build, manage, defend, and conquer. It isn't some cheesy
menu-driven thing where you just set a bunch of percentages
and then watch the numbers increase; you actually put your
civilization together yourself with building blocks in a
two-dimensional world. As a player, your goal is to
maximize your industrial strength by constructing
production centers for building cities, and to defend your
possessions from other players. Or, you can build armies
and attack other players to capture the means of production
        by force.

       DOOR AND MULTI-LINE SUPPORT
       ---------------------------

Newland supports four door protocols, covering most of the
popular BBS software. The command line for specifying the
door chain file and its location has two simple forms.
Either you leave it blank, and the program looks in the
most likely places for it, or you specify the path. The
        door protocols supported are:

Chain file BBSes that use it
            ---------- -----------------
            CHAIN.TXT WWIV, Telegard
DORINFO1.DEF RBBS, QBBS, FoReM, TPB, T.A.G.
            CALLINFO.BBS Wildcat!
DOOR.SYS Generic chain file used by various BBSes

To run Newland on a multi-line BBS, make sure you have the
SHARE command in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Also, each line
should be writing its door chain file to a different place
so there is no chance of collision if two users enter the
        game at once.

       HOW TO INSTALL
       --------------

You should put the game's files in a subdirectory in your
        BBS's directory, for example:

             C:\BBS>mkdir nl

             C:\BBS>cd nl

	     C:\BBS\NL>pkunzip ..\newland.zip

             C:\BBS\NL>copy nl.bat ..

The last line copies the small batch file NL.BAT into the
BBS directory. The next step is to set your BBS up to call
NL.BAT, which is what starts the game. Since there are so
many types of BBSes and they are all configured
differently, you will have to refer to your BBS
documentation to find out how to do this.

You can edit NL.BAT to change where the game looks for the
door chain file, and which one it looks for. You can also
call NL.BAT with a parameter, which will be passed along to
the game by the %1 batch file macro.

For a summary and examples, type NEWLAND /? from the NL
        directory.

You will need to have the ANSI.SYS driver installed in your
CONFIG.SYS file, otherwise the ANSI codes that Newland uses
will show up on your screen as left arrow characters and
numbers and left square brackets. Your CONFIG.SYS file
should have a line like this in it:

        DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS

It is possible for remote users to play Newland without
ANSI.SYS installed on your machine, but the screen will
look like garbage on your end.
