WHAT IS HANDYBAR?
-----------------------------------------------------------------

HandyBar is a customizable floating tool palette for PageMaker 5.
HandyBar comes in two versions: (1) HandyBar FREE, a fully
functional toolbar provided without cost, and (2) the registered
version of HandyBar, which includes more working buttons.

With HandyBar FREE, your favorite commands are just one click away:
open & close files, close all files, save all files, place
file, revert, mini-revert, select all, cut, copy, paste,
multiple paste, power paste, edit story, and print. Plus
HandyBar gives you features not found in PageMaker nor other
toolbars:

 - Customize HandyBar by adding, removing, or rearranging buttons
 - Open recently saved or closed files from a pop-up menu
 - Define and apply character styles for selected text
 - Insert special characters from a handy pop-up menu
 - Launch an application of your choice
 - Show or hide multiple palettes
 - Align selected objects
 - And more!

The regular or registered version costs $29.95 and includes
more features and other options for customization. For details,
see "What's in the Registered Version" below.

You may use HandyBar FREE and distribute it freely as long as
you include these files:

  HB4_FREE.EXE
  README.TXT
  SSDOCKTB.VBX
  SSIDXTAB.VBX
  THREED.VBX

NOTE: Users also need VBRUN300.DLL to use this program.

If you use the Macintosh version of PageMaker, a Macintosh
version of HandyBar is also available. Look for it on America
Online, CompuServe, or other download services.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

INSTALLATION
-----------------------------------------------------------------

To run HandyBar FREE, you need the following files on your computer:

 HB4_FREE.EXE
 SSDOCKTB.VBX
 SSIDXTAB.VBX
 THREED.VBX
VBRUN300.DLL (If you did not get this file with HandyBar, you
can obtain it from America Online or CompuServe. If you have
other programs written with Visual Basic version 3, you may
already have this file on your computer.)

To install HandyBar PM:

 1. Move the following files to the SYSTEM directory of your
     Windows directory:

	SSDOCKTB.VBX
     SSIDXTAB.VBX
     THREED.VBX
     VBRUN300.DLL

 2. Move HB4_FREE.EXE to the directory of your choice.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
QUICK START
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Since most folks hate reading manuals, we boiled all the
essentials down to these steps:

 1.	Install HandyBar as explained under Installation above
(don't worry; it's quick and easy).

 2. Launch HandyBar as you would any EXE file (double-click
HB4_FREE.EXE in File Manager or drag it to Program Manager to
     make an icon).

 3. To see what each button does, click the Controls Menu
button (the button in the top left corner of HandyBar) and
choose Customize. In the Customize HandyBar dialog box, select
a category from the list on the left and click any button to
     see its description below.

 4. To customize HandyBar, drag buttons from the Customize
HandyBar dialog box to HandyBar and drop them in any location
you want. To remove buttons, drag them off HandyBar and drop
them anywhere. When you are done, click Close.

 5. To customize other options, click the Control button and
     choose Preferences.

 6. To get a version of HandyBar in which all the buttons and
menus work, read "How to Get the Registered Version"
     earlier in this file.

NOTE: If these instructions are not enough for you and you have
a CompuServe or America Online account, I will send you
more thorough instructions for no charge.

ATTENTION SUPER PRINT USERS
-----------------------------------------------------------------

Using any print drivers from Zenographics' SuperPrint 3.x will
cause HandyBar start up to be extremely slow (up to several
minutes on older machines with lots of fonts). To correct this
problem, see the "Troubleshooting" section below.

-----------------------------------------------------------------
TROUBLESHOOTING
-----------------------------------------------------------------

PROBLEM:

You start HandyBar and wait for a while but nothing happens.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

If you are using HandyBar with SuperPrint 3.x and Adobe Type
Manager, start-up time for HandyBar can be extremely slow
(several minutes on older machines with lots of fonts). To
prevent this slowdown, do the following:

 1. Start Windows Control Panel and double-click the Printers icon.
 2. Select your SuperPrint SuperDriver in the Installed Printers
     list and click Setup....
 3. In the next dialog box, click Options... and in the next box
     click Tricks....
 4. At the bottom of the SuperDriver Tricks dialog box, uncheck
     the ATM box.
 5. Click OK repeatedly and then Close to close all dialog boxes
     and exit Control Panel.

HandyBar should now start much faster.

PROBLEM:

You switch from using a high-resolution video setup (such as
1024x768) to a lower resolution (such as 800x600 or VGA) and
the next time you start HandyBar, you don't see it.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION:

HandyBar may be off the edge of the screen. First, restart
Windows so you are sure HandyBar is not running. Then, in File
Manager or Program Manager, choose Run from the File menu and
type HNDYBAR4.INI and click OK. This should open HandyBar in a
text editor like Windows Notepad. Look for the [StartUp]
section. Underneath, look for two lines that begin StartTop=
and StartLeft=. Delete these two lines. Then save the file and
exit the text editor. The next time you start HandyBar, it
should appear in its default position.

PROBLEM:

You're working in PageMaker and HandyBar is working normally.
Then you notice HandyBar isn't in front of PageMaker any more.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS:

HandyBar always disappears when a program other than PageMaker
is active or when PageMaker disappears. If you're not sure why
HandyBar disappeared, the first thing to do is make sure the
PageMaker window is active and open on your desktop.

HandyBar also disappears when certain PageMaker dialog boxes
are open (such as the Place document dialog box). Closing the
dialog will make HandyBar reappear.

HandyBar doesn't stay on top when a HandyBar dialog box (such
as the Customize HandyBar dialog box, the HandyBar Preferences
dialog box, or the Define Character Styles dialog box) is open.
If you accidentally click in PageMaker while a HandyBar dialog
box is open, HandyBar will disappear behind PageMaker. You can
see HandyBar again by holding the Alt key and pressing Tab
until you see the HandyBar window. When you close the HandyBar
dialog box, HandyBar will again stay on top of PageMaker.

If no HandyBar dialog box is open and HandyBar disappears for
no apparent reason, try resizing the PageMaker window to see if
HandyBar is underneath. This normally should not happen, but if
it does, open and close any HandyBar dialog box to make it stay
on top again. For example, click the Controls Menu button,
choose About, and then click OK.

If all else fails, exit HandyBar and start it again.
